Clinical Observation of Tuberculous Cervical lymphadenitis

Abstract
A clinical review for 178 cases of tuberculous cervical lymphadenitis was made during past 5 years from April 1968 to March 1973 at the Department of General Surgery of Seoul Red Cross Hospital.
The results obtained as follow:
1. The age of the highest incidence was 30-30 years old age group 44 cases (24.72%).
2. The common local findings were painless swelling node 140 case¢¥s (78. 65%), painful swell-ing node 31 cases (17.42%), cold abscess 38 cases (21.35%) acid fistula or sinus 5 cases (2.81%).
3. Significant laboratory findings; over than 3% of eosinophils were 60%, over than 40% of lymphocytes were 37.69%, and over than 15 mm/hr of sedimentation rate were 48.8%.
4. Seasonal distribution; summer 46 cases (25.84%), Autumn 48 cases (26-94%), spring 54 cases (30.34%), and winter 30 cases (16.85%).
5. Node groups of involvement; superficial group 151 cases (84.83%), preauricular group 1 case (0.56%), submandibular group 14 cases (7.87%), submental group 2 cases (1. 12%), upper deep cervical group 89 cases (50.00%) lower deep cervical group 47 cases (26.40%). Axillary group 9 cases (5.06%), Inguinal group 12 cases (6.74%) and unstated group 6 cases (3.37%). The unilateral was 91.57% (left; 30.68, right; 69.32%) and bilateral 8.43%.
6. The time interval from the onset of symptom to the first visit was less than 6 months in 134 cases (75.28%), 7 months to 12 months 10 cases (5.62%), over than one year 12 cases (6.74%).
7. Associated tuberculosis of cervical lymphadenitis 44 cases (24.72%), axillary tuberculous
lymphadenitis 9 cases (5. 06%), and tuberculous peritonitis 1 cases (0.5%).
8. Post op. complications were as follows; infection 10.89%, nerve injury 0.64% and fistula or sinus 6.4%.
9. The recurrence of our series was 9% following combined therapy (surgical and medical) during 6 months in 54 cases of the follow up.
10. Most good results of treatment were combined therapy (surgical and medical therapy).
